Andrew Cooke is a Senior Manager of Responsible Mining in the Better Business division of Levin Sources. He is a qualified lawyer, environmental scientist and a leader in artisanal and small-scale mining and biodiversity conservation. Andrew has more than 30 years’ experience in mining and environmental law, sustainable business practices, CSR and natural resource governance. His work solves complex problems and adds value for both public and private clients around the world.

Andrew leads the company’s Responsible Mining division. He manages projects from pitch to publication, providing policy and legal analysis and advisory, environmental expertise, supply chain due diligence, feasibility studies , and innovative business development strategies.

Prior to his work for Levin Sources, Andrew lived and worked in Madagascar for more than 15 years. Following a period of providing technical advisory and policy development for marine and coastal conservation for the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Andrew returned to law to develop the mining, telecoms, raw materials and due diligence value propositions of a leading African firm.

In 2010, during his tenure as an Environmental Manager for the Ambatovy Nickle & Cobalt mining and processing joint venture, Andrew developed a world-leading biodiversity offset programme, which won the Nedbank Sustainable Business Award. The programme focused on engagement with artisanal and small-scale mining communities to resolve issues along a 220km mineral pipeline.

In 2014, Andrew was elected as Council Member of the Madagascar Biodiversity Foundation (FAPBM), responsible for the promoting the foundation’s collaboration with the extractives sector. He also served as Corporate Environmental and Sustainability Manager for Madagascar Oil, where works on environmental and community well-being and development programmes from 2015-2016.

Andrew qualified as a solicitor in 1984 at the Supreme Court of England and Wales. He holds a Master of Science degree in Tropical Coastal Management from the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and a Bachelor’s degree in Zoology and Animal Biology from the University of Cambridge.

Andrew works in English and French, and is based at Levin Sources, Cambridge.
