Dr. Yolande Kyngdon-McKay is the Manager of the Gems and Jewellery division at Levin Sources. She is a project manager, data analyst, researcher and expert in several raw materials supply chains, including diamonds, coloured gemstones, conflict minerals, jewellery and electronics.
With more than 10 years’ experience researching and working in extractives-reliant industries, Yolande leads on projects that require in-depth supply chain, environmental impact and industry governance expertise. She has provided context-specific assessment, analysis, advisory and research services for a range of public and private clients, including Fortune 500 companies, NGOs, governments, and jewellery manufacturers and retailers around the world.
During her tenure at Levin Sources, Yolande’s project highlights have included assessing the commercial potential of Ethiopia’s coloured gemstone sector on behalf of the Government of Ethiopia and the World Bank; developing the foundational guidelines for managing mining’s biodiversity impacts in the 15 countries of southern Africa; conducting spot checks on artisanal and small-scale miners in Asia to facilitate the responsible sourcing of gold; assessing the environmental impacts of select precious gemstones across 16 countries; identifying responsible sources of coloured gemstones from artisanal and small-scale miners for downstream clients; developing codes of conduct and supplier contracts for jewellery manufacturers and retailers; and developing guidelines and support systems for small-to-medium enterprises performing due diligence on mineral supply chains.
Yolande has conducted field research in Africa, Asia, Europe, USA and Australia, and desk-based research across over 50 countries.
Yolande holds a PhD from the University of New South Wales, Australia, where she utilised a bespoke tripartite theoretical grid to critically analyse the development of the modern diamond industry. She also holds an Honours degree in International Studies from the University of New South Wales and a Bachelor’s in International Studies from the University of Canberra. Prior to joining ELL, Yolande worked in the jewellery industry, as an editor for an online international relations journal, and as a Senior Fellow at an anti-human trafficking NGO.
